Saint Angela’s College breaks the mould with new online Masters in Religious Education

Saint Angela’s College, Sligo, is launching a new part-time Master of Arts in Religious Education and Social Justice which will be delivered online from autumn 2021. Closing date for applications is 16 June next.

Welcoming the new programme, Dr Mary Shanahan, Head of School of Education & Director of Religious Education, said, “We are delighted to be able to offer our part-time MA in Religious Education and Social Justice as a fully online programme from this September. This inclusive and accessible programme will allow students to analyse the provision of religious education in schools as a social justice issue in its own right. In so doing, they will develop their awareness of, and responses to, the impact of social justice issues on religion, education, and religious education.

“Additionally, this programme will equip students with the skills needed to critically assess the challenges and opportunities presented for the provision of high-quality religious education in contemporary schools. The programme’s modules are designed to be open and dialogical. It is hoped that this pedagogical approach will appeal to students from a broad range of backgrounds.”

The course is open to graduates from a wide range of disciplines including but not limited to Initial Teacher Education (primary and post-primary), philosophy, theology, religious studies, politics, equality studies, anthropology, psychology, sociology and legal studies. The programme may also appeal to those working in areas such as advocacy, the charity sector, youth and community work, pastoral care, parish worker or those with a keen interest in the relationship between religion, education and social justice.
